Who is Tammy Honeywell?
I am a public servant, a labor leader, an activist, and a lifelong resident of Onondaga County.
I was born and married in Syracuse. My spouse Matthew and I bought our first home in 2016, in the Winkworth Neighborhood.
We rented the majority of the time we raised our 2 children, and know the struggles that residents face to find safe, affordable and quality housing.
At 18, I started work in banking, moved into the insurance industry, and for the last 14 years have worked in public service. 11 of those years were with Onondaga County Department of Social Services. The last 3 have been at the New York State Department of Health.
During my time in public service, I have served in various union capacities. From convention delegate, Political Action Committee Chair, LEAD graduate, to Executive Vice President of Local 834, who represents over 2000 public servants who work for Onondaga County, the City of Syracuse, and many other town and village municipalities.
I now serve as Council Leader of my current union.
Union work has given me the education and experience of public speaking, grievance processes, and conflict resolution.
Aside from public service, I have also been actively involved in the community in various capacities. From listening and learning to those with different experiences, organizing and participating in actions, getting involved in political and issue based campaigns, joining and creating coalitions, to leading local organizations in the fight for basic human rights, and against oppression.
These experiences have helped to shape the knowledge and work that I do every day, and will be brought to the Legislature when elected.
Since approximately 2007 I have been a member of an organization called the Jaycees, or in some areas, JCI. Which is a global organization. I started that journey under the Liverpool Jaycees chapter, part of the New York State Jaycees.
Through them I learned boardroom procedure, Robert’s Rules, how to organize events, and address root causes.
In 2010, we started doing a cleanup at the Erie Canal Park in Camillus. We formed connections with some of the volunteers who work year round for the park. We cleaned trails, removed debris, rehabilitated a section of Clinton’s Ditch, planted flowers, and other work that has been needed on the grounds over the years.
In 2017, I taught a seminar on Human Trafficking in Niagara Falls. There were attendees from both the United States and Canada present. This was after attending training, and coordinating ideas with McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center. Which included advocating for County employees to receive the same training, and what to look for, and resources to provide.
In 2018, I became Governor #354, and a lifetime member of the organization.
In 2019, I became the State President of the New York State Jaycees, AKA, JCI New York State. Our focus was to “Rise Up” and create lasting impact in our local communities. We focused on different areas of how to make that lasting impact. We rounded out the year by visiting the Legislature and Assembly at the State Capitol.
In 2024, I became Senator #82821 of JCI New York senate.
The knowledge I have gained from them has helped in other work I have been engaged in within the community.
